The View from the Curb by Jacob M. Appel: A Poetic Fusion of Suburban Memories and Historical Reverberations

Acclaimed author and psychiatrist Jacob M. Appel invites readers to embark on a poetic journey with his second collection, The View from the Curb. In this remarkable volume, Appel draws on his unique blend of professional expertise and personal history to craft a lyrical narrative that juxtaposes the lighthearted oddities of suburban life with the haunting echoes of pre-war Europe.

Using humor as a balm for tragedy, Appel’s poetry deftly combines formal meter with experimental structures to present a fresh and resonant voice. The collection is as much a reflection on the human condition as it is a meditation on familial and historical memory.

Appel’s rich and varied career informs his writing. As a psychiatrist, ethicist, and historian, he brings depth to his poetic observations. Currently a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, where he directs Ethics Education in Psychiatry and leads the East Harlem Health Outreach Program's Mental Health Clinic, Appel is no stranger to life’s complexities. His professional insights blend seamlessly with his literary expertise, evident in his extensive bibliography, including five novels, ten short story collections, and his previous volume of poetry.
