Rosalia Scalia’s UNDER THE RADAR Explores the Complexities of Grief and Resilience
Portland, OR — January 7, 2025 — Unsolicited Press is proud to announce the release of Under the Radar, the highly anticipated second short story collection by acclaimed author Rosalia Scalia. Through 21 poignant and masterfully crafted stories, Scalia delves into the myriad forms of grief and loss, unveiling the raw, unfiltered emotions that accompany life’s most challenging moments.
In Under the Radar, readers meet an eclectic cast of characters, each navigating personal trials in an indifferent world. In the title story, set in the 1970s, Hope and Kenny’s plans to marry are upended when Kenny reveals he is gay, unraveling a love story that could never be. In “All the Small Joys,” two sisters clash over their mother’s funeral plans in a darkly humorous debate involving a mink stole and a dog’s ashes. Stories like “Static Electricity” and “Butterfly Moments” explore the impact of public tragedies and private losses, from a school shooting to the grief of a mother mourning her Marine son killed by friendly fire.
Praised by celebrated authors such as Philip Schultz, Susan Muaddi Darraj, and Ron Tanner, Scalia’s work offers an unflinching yet compassionate examination of humanity. Her characters—flawed, resilient, and achingly real—resonate deeply, reminding us of the universality of loss and the power of love to endure.
