Enter the Dark, Hilarious, and Haunting World of Animal Husbandry by Taylor García: A Collection of Stories for Our Times

Animal Husbandry, a new short story collection by Taylor García, is set to hit shelves on November 5, 2024. Published by Unsolicited Press, this collection dives into the raw and transformative journeys of men navigating their own mini-apocalypses as their worlds — both real and virtual — crumble and evolve around them. With striking wit and provocative storytelling, García crafts vivid portraits of husbands, fathers, influencers, and lovers trying to reshape themselves in a rapidly changing world.

In the title story, “Animal Husbandry,” Mario’s job is outsourced to AI, pushing him to drift into the company of his polyamorous neighbors while his wife falls for a chatbot, threatening their marriage. “Journey to the Edge of the Earth” follows Carl “Flat Manly” Bonifacio, a TikTok-famous flat earther, as he grapples with the absurdity of his own beliefs — just before a much-publicized cruise to the “edge of the earth.” In “Circle of Death,” a former circus strongman confronts a life-altering shoulder injury, reexamining his choices in a world where bravado is no longer an option. Drawing inspiration from Margaret Atwood, “Medicine Box” imagines a world where men’s bodies are legislated, told through the lens of a shaman’s son reflecting on his father's legacy.

Taylor García, known for his novel Slip Soul and the story collection Functional Families, brings his unflinching lens to this collection, exploring the absurdities and tenderness of men facing their vulnerabilities. García, a contributor to The Good Men Project with his popular column “Father Time,” lives in Southern California with his family. His Neomexicano roots and MFA from Pacific University Oregon enrich the narratives with a voice both fierce and compassionate.

Animal Husbandry (ISBN: 978-1-963115-32-1) is available at major retailers, and booksellers can order copies through Ingram.
